December Tornadoes

A picture of various gemstones laid out on a piece of stone with the words of Isaiah 54:11-12, “O you afflicted one,
Tossed with tempest, and not comforted,
Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems,
And lay your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
Your gates of crystal,
And all your walls of precious stones." The Bible verse is offered as comfort to the afflicted victims of the December tornadoes.

More storms made the news in the overnight hours as tornadoes and high winds hit parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Reports about these storms and the ones over the past weekend were using words like “record number,” “unprecedented,” “historic.” I didn’t even think about the fact that these are December tornadoes. We should be having snow and cold temperatures by now, not tornadoes and moderate temperatures. Unusual weather makes me think of various prophecies in the Bible, such as in Luke 21:25-28 when Jesus tells us what to watch for leading up to His return.

I watched news footage yesterday of areas hit last weekend and couldn’t help but notice the emptiness in people’s eyes as they spoke. They are obviously and understandably very much in shock, and how difficult it is for them as they sift through the rubble that now buries the life they once knew. Some will be moving away. Others will rebuild. All will attempt to heal.

While staring these trials in the face, it’s difficult to see past the present pain and suffering, but for believers, Jesus offers hope, healing, and a future. The Holy Spirit comforts us in our afflictions. If you don’t know that hope or peace that comes from accepting Jesus into your life, I encourage you to say a prayer, asking your Heavenly Father for direction. He will guide you to someone who can help you find your way.

Bible Verse of the Day

The heading of this Bible passage is The Eternal Covenant of Peace. We can rest in that gift from our Father. God gives us peace. We just need to approach Him in prayer.

“O you afflicted one,
Tossed with tempest, and not comforted,
Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems,
And lay your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
Your gates of crystal,
And all your walls of precious stones.
Isaiah 54:11-12 NKJV

Pray

Please join me this week in praying for the victims of the tornadoes that devastated six states this past weekend and at least three states overnight. Let’s pray for their healing and restoration. Pray also that they will seek comfort in Jesus Christ and that unbelievers will come to know Him through this experience. Let’s also pray that communities and families come together to help and love one another in a way that will be a blessing to the victims. Pray that the missing people are found.
