A Deep Love

Tall golden grass in the foreground, a plain of green grass behind it. The sun is rising over the trees in the background giving everything a golden hue. The bible verse from Matthew 13:44 (NKJV) says, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."

Last Sunday the Pastor asked, “Does your life demonstrate a deep love for Christ?” He asked that after reading Matthew 13:44-46. My understanding of those two short parables was completely wrong and so I want to share this with you.

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." Matthew 13:44 NKJV

Paraphrasing David Guzik: the field is the world. The man who found the treasure is Jesus. Jesus gave everything for the treasure which is us (believers).

“This powerfully shows how Jesus gave everything to redeem the whole world to preserve a treasure in it, and the treasure is His people.”

A picture of an open oyster shell sitting on a beach, the pearl exposed. The words from Matthew 13:45-46 NKJV say: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it."

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Matthew 13:45-46 NKJV

“These two parables speak of how highly the King values the people of His kingdom.”

Christ demonstrated His deep love for us by sacrificing everything to come to earth and live as a man. He was tempted just like we are tempted. He then sacrificed His life to pay our debts. He bore God’s wrath so we could come before Him cleansed. Jesus tore the temple curtain giving us full access to our Heavenly Father. So, I ask you, “Does your life demonstrate a deep love for Christ?”

Prayer

Father, we are a sinful people who do not deserve your love and mercy. However, You love us and forgive us anyway. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. You want to have an intimate relationship with each one of us yet we continually push You away. How do You continue to bless us? Lord, Abba, we wish to repent. We come to You broken with a desire to improve and grow every day so that we may become the children You want us to be. Give us strength, wisdom, direction to demonstrate our love for You to everyone we meet. Give us the words to speak, the hearts of fire to share the Good News, and to be faithful servants. We love You, Lord. The Holy Spirit stirs in us. Our bodies are His temple and we do not wish to grieve Him. Lord, lead, guide, and direct us. May we bring You glory in our words and deeds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Remember:

God loves us so very much. We just need to remember to take everything to Him. He’s there for us, through the good and the bad.
