In the Image of God

Image of 2 waterfalls with the words from Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV, "Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."

Notice the emphasis God places on the fact that He created us in His image. It’s repeated four times in just two verses. The bold emphasis is mine, but the number of times and closeness of the repetition shows God’s emphasis. He wants us to know this is important.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV

What an incredible act–I can’t even think of the word I’m searching for…but think about it…God made us in His image. That’s pure love, I believe. He created us out of love, to love Him, and to love one another. Being made in His image carries a responsibility with it to act and carry on as He would – His characteristics.

When Adam and Eve messed that up, He sent His only Son to come to Earth to show us how it’s done; to show us how we’re to behave. He showed us how to be Christlike and that it is possible to deny temptation and not sin.

God created us for a purpose. Let’s show Him that we got the message. Let’s demonstrate what it means to be an image-bearer of our Lord.

Prayer

Father, we come before you today to ask for wisdom and guidance in our daily walk. Lord, please use us to show the world Your loving and merciful qualities. Shine Your light through us so non-believers will be drawn to You. When our focus strays to worldly matters, please bring our eyes back to You so that we may stay on the straight and narrow path. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
