Holy Breath

Jesus' holy breath gifted the Holy Spirit to His disciples. John 20:22

Jesus breathed on them

The Pastor spoke on John 20:1-23 yesterday, and oddly, I hardly took any notes, but what I did write down was “breathe, air, wind.”

John 20:19-22 NKJV says:

Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

In Genesis 2:7 (NKJV), we read:

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

So God’s breath gave mankind life, and Jesus’ breath gave him (us) His Spirit. The power of their life-giving breath is bestowed on us. We’re made in their image. Our sins are washed clean because of Jesus’ substitutionary sacrifice on the cross so that when the Father looks at us, He sees His perfect Son instead of our sin. If only everyone could see this amazing gift and understand that it is free to anyone who declares Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior.

Father, we lift up to You all our loved ones who are not saved. Please bring them into the fold. Father, please use us to reach the lost, just as Jesus commanded His disciples so long ago. We all benefit from Your Spiritual gifts, but there are many who don’t understand what they’re to do for the Kingdom. Please show them the way. Father, we pray this in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
